691 arrested over weekend

Multiple operations in the Capital City resulted in 691 suspects being arrested for various offences this weekend.
From Saturday, multidisciplinary operations involving local SAPS stations, the Gauteng and national traffic police, Gauteng crime prevention wardens, home affairs and correctional services, carried out operations across the city.
The weekend operations aimed to protect the citizens of Tshwane through its crime prevention-driven operations, according to SAPS Tshwane district spokesperson Johan van Dyk.
It is part of a long-term operation in place from 2018 to 2024 called O Kae Maloa, meaning “Where is the Law?”
The aim is to reclaim the space and areas controlled by criminals, enforce laws and by-laws, maintain law and order and create a conducive environment for all people of Gauteng to participate in social and economic activities.
Under the leadership of Major-General Azwinndini Nengovhela, the operation targeted the streets of Sunnyside and Pretoria Moot policing precincts on Saturday.
“The detectives arrested 234 suspects of which, 71 persons were arrested for gender-based violence-related offences,” said Van Dyk.
“The multidisciplinary team’s presence was evident as they visited six liquor premises and closed four premises for not complying with the liquor act.”
A further 61 undocumented immigrants were arrested for being in the country illegally, and one person was arrested for employing illegal immigrants.
Three suspects were arrested for possession of drugs and one person for dealing in drugs.
Two suspects were arrested for drunkenness and 21 persons for drinking in public.
One person was arrested for possession of stolen property.
Four persons were arrested for driving under the influence, with 86 Aarto traffic infringement notices issued to the value of R72 700 at a roadblock that was held in Sunnyside.
“In total, 1 723 persons and 790 vehicles were searched in both the Pretoria Moot and Sunnyside policing areas,” said Van Dyk.
Nengovhela congratulated members of the multi-disciplinary operation and thanked the role-players for their continued support in this operation.
