Motorists warned to drive with caution

The South African Weather Service issued a Level 2 yellow warning for disruptive rain, with localised flooding.

The national weather service issued a warning for localised flooding on Monday and advised motorists to avoid low-water crossings.

Reports on social media said that a motorbike was found washed into the river with keys still in the ignition, with no signs of the driver.

Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller confirmed the incident.

“We have already had one motorcyclist fall off. He hit the water and had an accident. Luckily, he is fine and was not seriously injured.”

Miller confirmed that the man was found safe at home.

He urged motorists to drive with caution in wet weather conditions and to avoid low-water bridges prone to flooding.

“Where motorists come across a low-water bridge in a flood, motorists are requested to please find alternative routes,” he said.

“Do not cross them as motorists will potentially find themselves in danger.

“Specifically avoid End and Rabie, and End and Blackwood streets.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), showers and thundershowers are predicted for the remainder of Monday, going into Tuesday morning.

SAWS issued a level 2 yellow warning for disruptive rain, with a likelihood of localised flooding.

A level 2 warning is issued for weather events of a high likelihood with a minor impact.

While the rain is expected to clear up during the day on Tuesday, showers and thundershowers are expected in the evening.

Weather conditions are expected to calm to partly cloudy and clear conditions by Wednesday.
