Police hunt Mams East mob justice attackers

The two people were allegedly assaulted by the community in two separate incidents in Mamelodi East last week Friday and Sunday.

Mamelodi police strongly condemned mob justice attacks in the area last week Friday and Sunday.

Police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane said two people were allegedly assaulted by the community in two separate incidents in Mamelodi East.

He said the police won’t tolerate any acts of vigilantism and people taking the law into their own hands.

It is alleged the community attacked the two people after claiming they committed crimes.

“On Friday around 11:30, police received complaints from Nellmaphius Extension 22 about a group of people assaulting a 30-year-old man.

“The police quickly rushed to the scene and found a man lying on the ground with wounds to his body,” said Mashiloane.

In the other incident, on Sunday around 07:00 in Mamelodi East extension 6, Mohlatswa Street, police attended a crime scene where a man was badly injured by community members.

It is alleged that both were assaulted by the community because they believed they had committed crimes in the area.

“Cases of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) are open for investigation,” he said.

The search is on for those responsible for the assaults and police appeal for anyone with information that can assist in solving these cases to come forward.

He said the police strongly condemned acts of vigilantism and discouraged the community from taking the law into their own hands.

Mashiloane encouraged community members to work with the police to fight crime in the community.

“We discourage, in the strongest possible terms, such action. It is unlawful to take the law into your own hands.”

He added that the public should report any crime to their nearest police.

“We condemn mob justice. Let the law take its course.

“No one is above the law and no one has the right to beat or kill someone just because he or she committed a crime.”

Mashiloane advised the public to report any suspicious persons to the police on 08600 10111.
