Motorists urged to drive safely after 20 accidents in a week

"Winter comes with weather conditions like fog and mist which may decrease visibility. Motorists can increase visibility by switching their headlights and fog lamps on and driving at reduced speeds,'' says Mabaso.

Tshwane EMS has urged motorists to drive safely, after 20 motor vehicle accidents were reported in the area between May 16 and 21.

Spokesperson Charles Mabaso said the common contributor to accidents is failure to comply with the road rules related to speed and roadworthiness of vehicles, among others.

“Winter comes with weather conditions like fog and mist which may decrease visibility. Motorists can increase visibility by switching their headlights and fog lamps on and drive at reduced speeds,” Mabaso added.

He said it is important that pedestrians also wear clothes that increase their visibility and only cross roads only when it is safe to do so.

In addition, paramedic service SVTA/Lifemed spokesperson Dean Slater urged motorists to stay safe on the road.

HE GAVE THE FOLLOWING ROAD SAFETY TIPS:

– Motorists should not use their phones or any other electronic device while driving.

– They should always keep 100% of their attention on driving.

– Do not go over the speed limit.

– Keep a three-second gap to the car in front of them and up to eight seconds if the weather is bad.

– When embarking on a long distance journey, build time into the trip schedule to stop for food, rest breaks, phone calls or other business.

– Secure cargo that may move around while the vehicle is in motion.

– Do not attempt to retrieve items that fall to the floor while driving.

– Always drive sober and avoid drunken driving.

– Never drive when you are tired.

– Ensure all vehicle occupants wear a seat belt.

– Avoid driving during load-shedding when possible.

– Use your hazard lights during poor visibility conditions to increase your own visibility.

– Ensure the vehicle is 100% roadworthy.

– Do not let your passengers distract you.

– Ensure you have the correct emergency equipment should the car break down.

– Decrease speed when driving in the rain.
