Celebration of community with Pretoria events this weekend

Wollies turns 10, 'Die Kaplyn' extends its run, and a day especially for Biltong and Boerewors. Check out these events and more in the Capital City this weekend.

Die Kaplyn, until June 4

By popular demand, the AfriForum Theatre has extended the run of local musical Die Kaplyn.

The show was initially supposed to run from April 26 to May 21.

This musical is a gripping story of events during the Border War in the 1980s.

“The overwhelmingly positive reaction of the public to Die Kaplyn and the ticket sales exceeded AfriForum Theatre’s expectations. This makes it possible that we can now offer even more people the opportunity to see this musical,” says Kallie Kriel, CEO of AfriForum.

Wollies Birthday bash, May 27

Wollies is turning 10! And they are celebrating with a party at their place complete with jumping castles, goods and food stalls, face painting, line dancing and even Ollie the clown.

A small grass roots Wollies Animal Project started as a sterilisation assistance organisation in 2003, but grew into what became the Woollies Animal Shelter we know today, started in 2013.

The event starts at 08:00 on Saturday, and entrance fee is a donation of food or blankets to help keep the pro-life rescue organisation running, and their doggies and kitties (and more) fed, warm and healthy.

Boeremusiek, Rocco-styl, May 26, 27, and 28

Boere-classics with a twist, Rocco de Villiers, Lizelle le Roux, and Hansie Roodt will be treating the Centurion Theatre to this celebration of South African indigenous music.

The theatre says the show is as classic as a tightly starched Voortrekker hood, as fresh as a milk tart from the oven, and as mouth-wateringly juicy as a boerewors roll straight from the braai.

Rocco will revisit the music of his youth next to Le Roux on violin and accordion, and Roodt on the guitar, concertina and pedal-drum.

Dewald Dippenaar, May 26

Start off the weekend with out-of-towner Afrikaans and English songwriter Dewald Dippenaar, who will be jamming out at Jitterbugs from 20:00.

If you miss him on Friday, catch him on Saturday at Salsa Mexican Grill in Menlyn Maine, and on Sunday at Little Britain in Centurion.

Protea Cullifest, May 27 and 28

For an escape from the city, the Protea Cullifest in Cullinan features 11 well known live acts, food and produce stalls, hand-made goods market, children’s entertainment, wine and beer gardens, and of course lots of stunning proteas.

Catch Adam, Franja du Plessis, Ruhan du Toit, Appel, Sharoney, Piet Smit, Leah, Nicholas Louw, Fatman, Ruan-Josh, and Janie Bay from 08:00 to 17:00, with acts starting from 10:00.

The event will be held at the NG church grounds on Zonderwater Road in Cullinan.

Casper de Vries, May 25

Back in his birthplace of Silverton, Pretoria, the comedy legend Casper de Vries will be performing live at Jarr Bar near the Pretoria Botanical Gardens.

Love him or loathe him, De Vries has decades of pulling laughs from even the toughest of audiences behind his name. Catch him on Thursday evening from 19:00.

Next weekend:

Biltong and boerewors festival, June 3 and 4

Two core South African traditional snacks must be celebrated with the whole family at the Pretoria Botanical Gardens.

This year’s event includes a Miss Biltong and Mr Boerewors contest, as well as beer drinking, wors eating, dancing and giveaway competitions.

A special Carnival themed children’s area includes children’s stalls, kiddies food, games, rides, shows, face painting, and much more to keep the kids busy while parents enjoy the beer garden and live entertainment.
