Litres of water lost because of burst pipe in Gezina roads

“They are wasting thousands of liters of water at this intersection every day,” a resident told Rekord.

Litres of water are going down the drain due to a burst water pipe in parts of Ella Street and 10th Avenue in Gezina.

Residents are concerned about the fact that the metro hasn’t taken any action to address the issue and large quantities of water are going to waste every day.

According to resident Jasper van der Westhuizen, the problem has been ongoing for more than a month and he has reported it many times.

“They are wasting thousands of litres of water at this intersection every day,” he told Rekord.

Van der Westhuizen estimates that around 80 000 litres of water are wasted every 24 hours at this intersection.

“We get no reaction from the metro or our ward councillors.

“All we want is an explanation and someone to come and assess the situation,” he said.

“We have lost millions of litres of water and it’s very frustrating when you feel like nobody listens to you.”

Van der Westhuizen said the lack of care is concerning given the fact the province struggled with water supply earlier in the year.

“We have learned to live with load-shedding, but if you don’t have water you can’t live.”

This comes against mounting debt for the metro.

In 2021, Tshwane’s debtor’s book stood at R17-billion and had worsened to R20.8-billion on March 16.

The metro has blamed its inability to implement advanced technology to capacitate its revenue collection effort for this high debt.

This debt has weighed heavily on metro finances, increasing the risk of disrupted future basic service supply.
