Former female police officers launch NGO

The group from Soshanguve launched the SAPS Soshanguve First Female Police Officials at the Assupol headquarters in Menlyn on Saturday, May 20.

A group of retired female police officers recently launched a female-based program that seeks to give back to various communities.

Stakeholders involved say that the initiative was started out to unite under a good cause that seeks to address social ills and crime in the metro.

“This is an NGO that looks into assisting both the youth and the community at large to address social ills such as drug use, bullying, and criminal conduct and to ensure that communities remain safe and secure,” said Central SAPS spokesperson, Constable Thabang Nkhumise.

The NGO forms part of the extended measures that police have introduced to combat crimes which include the recently established units of crime prevention wardens.

“The initiative is part of a community policing program that incorporates community members and other external stakeholders to assist the South African Police Service to combat crime and uphold the law,” Nkhumise continued.

The founding group members’ are Gertrude Maluleke- Chairperson, Joyce Matjele- Secretary, Mmabatho Leemisa- Treasurer, Madikotsi Nkomo, Angelina Mtshatsheni, Rose Sibaya, Lerato Mashego, Thoko Sibulela and Rachel Phukubye.

A program consisting of various speakers was run, also the attendees joined in song and prayer. A number of issues such as mental and financial wellness were discussed as these is some of the issues police face on the daily bases.

Another retired officer, ex-top cop Lt-General T.A Mashigo who was in attendance, applauded the women for their courage and patriotism. He said this is a special area in policing and it is important to put women in managerial posts to assist their male counterparts in fighting crime.
