Dream Room launch at Steve Biko academic hospital
The Dream Room has been designed to be a haven of healing where children who are fighting cardiac and pulmonary illness can go to.
A newly renovated paediatric ward was officially opened on Wednesday at the Steve Biko Academic hospital.
The Gauteng health department, Cell C and Reach for A Dream Foundation came together to create a safe space for children fighting cardiac and pulmonary illnesses at the hospital.
Cell C contributed funds to help design, construct and equip the Dream Room with the latest sensory technology.
Equipped with a range of books, games, toys, and electronic devices, including a new state-of-the-art virtual reality station, the Dream Room will provide a much-needed respite from the sterile and impersonal surroundings of the hospital ward.
Gauteng MEC for health and wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko said the renovation of this ward is more than just a physical transformation.
“This ward is an upliftment of spirits, an enhancement of patient care and a true representation of the dreams we all hold for these brave children,” she said.
A resident psychologist will also run a variety of fun and educational activities to ensure that the children’s developmental milestones are met.
Head of business at The Reach for a Dream Foundation, Natalie Lazaris said they know that hospital visits can be very stressful and overwhelming for children and families especially when they are facing serious health challenges.

“This room has been designed to be a haven of healing for children who are fighting cardiac and pulmonary illnesses. We hope that this will have a positive impact on their well-being and recovery,” she said.
She also highlighted the importance of the dream room, with the aim of helping those families who heavily rely on constant treatments and observation, who can’t step out of the hospital.
