Local NGO and stakeholders commemorate Africa Day last week

Kids showed off their patriotism through flag hoisting, poetry, dance, drama, public speaking and a parade.

Kool 2B South African and relevant stakeholders honoured Africa Day over a two-day celebration on May 25 and 26 which included a flag parade among other activities.

The NGO says that the African Appreciation Parade which took place on Africa Day (May 25) was in honour of Africa’s “Kings, Queens, and Icons”.

The parade was also said to encourage development and excellence among young learners by celebrating the continent’s achievements and contributions.

The effort was carried out in partnership with the Department of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, the City of Tshwane’s north and south districts, and the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture.

“Learners in the districts participated in the flag parade from the Ditsong national museum to the Ditsong natural cultural museum,” said Kool 2B South African founder Khaya “Kool” Seoketsa.

Whilst waving South African and African Union flags, calls were made for an end to conflicts in Africa because the gathering believes that through peace the continent can be much stronger.

During a workshop, the youth had the chance to learn about iconic African figures such as Nelson Mandela, King Shaka Zulu, Queen Sheba, Mansa Musa, King Moshoeshoe, Queen Mojaji, King Sekwati, Sekhukhune, Nodada, Barolong Barrabotshidi and many more, about their lives and fight against colonialism and imperialism.

“It’s important for learners to commemorate days like Africa as it strengthens educational values in schools,” said Mashala of the Gauteng Education Department.

Guest speakers spoke on the importance of Child Protection Week (May 28 to June 4), home affairs officials spoke on applying for identity and a representative of the Ahmad Kathrada Foundation gave a talk on anti-racism.

The following day (May 26) learners from Jopie Fourie primary school were awarded the Pride of Kool 2B South African’s School Floating Trophy award during their African celebrations.

The trophy is awarded monthly to the school that commemorates national days the most patriotically. JP Fourie received the award for their Freedom Day commemoration last month as they forfeited a public holiday to show respect to South Africa’s fallen liberators at an event a Freedom Park.
