Mabopane community and neighbourhood watch clear illegal dumpsite
The clean-up was also a way of raising awareness of environmental protection.
Residents and the community neighbourhood watch forum for section B collaborated to clear an illegal dumpsite in Mabopane recently.
The illegal dumping site cleared was opposite the skills centre and the Sanctuary of Christ ministries church in Mabopane block X.
The collaboration saw a dumping site being cleaned, as well as rubble being removed and trees cut.
“This illegal dumping is a health hazard for the people living in close proximity.
“The whole idea of the cleaning-up was to prevent further littering and dumping,” said Moleboge Mamogale, the secretary for community neighbourhood watch forum.

MABOPANE RESIDENTS COMPLAIN ABOUT STENCH AND OTHER SIDE EFFECTS
Mamogale said residents have been complaining about the bad stench coming from the dumping site.
“People attending church or going to the skills centre have had to endure a bad smell coming from the site.”
She claimed that the residents were becoming sick and were unable to open windows for fresh air due to the foul stench.
“We have a rodent, mosquito and fly problem due to the nature of things being dumped there.”
She said that illegal dumping was a major problem in Mabopane and that the locals needed to band together to fight it.
Mamogale stated the clean-up was also a way to raise awareness about environmental protection.
“We erected a self-made billboard that reads ‘No More Dumping’ to create awareness.
“We took this initiative due to dumping illegally being a norm locally.
“We therefore set an example for the rest of the community to follow.”

Tall grass as well as trees were trimmed to clear the area so that residents can pass freely.
“Some criminals used the high brush to hide then mug passers-by.
“We had a couple of muggings near the dumping site.”
Mamogale urged community members to protect their area and promised to involve law-enforcement to help with illegal dumping.
