Boy (16) hit by bakkie in Monument Park

An eyewitness confronted the driver in question who denied any knowledge of the incident.

A 16-year-old boy was injured when he was hit by a white GWM bakkie in Monument Park on Monday afternoon just after 17:00.

According to eyewitnesses, the bakkie driver was driving erratically and did not stop after hitting Adolph Krúger, who was cycling on his way back from the garage.

Devon Janse van Rensburg saw the incident as he was driving behind the bakkie.

“I was driving behind him for six or seven kilometres, he was swerving all over the road. A bunch of times he even went off the road and back on.”

Janse van Rensburg said that the bakkie did not move away from the bicycle and hit Krúger from the side, before driving away from the scene.

“He went face first into the tar and then the bakkie drove away,” said Janse van Rensburg.

Janse van Rensburg, who was able to identify the driver of the vehicle, confronted the man at his home. “The man said he didn’t know anything about it.”

MOTHER GRATEFUL SON DIDN’T SUSTAIN LIFE-THREATENING INJURY

Krúger’s mother, Adel, said that she was grateful that her son did not sustain any life-threatening injury.

“His face was badly bruised, his upper lip is bad and the skin on his chin was grazed off. His hands are badly bruised and his one elbow is very sore.

He has body aches as well. But luckily he doesn’t seem to have any head injury.

“He went face first into the tar.”

“Luckily the worst case didn’t happen. It will take a while to heal.”

Adel said that she was at work when the incident happened, and had called her son, who told her he was hit by a car.

“I can’t even remember why I was phoning him, but when he answered he said: ‘Mom, a car hit me, dad is here. We are looking for the guy, he doesn’t want to come out of his house’.

“It was a terrible feeling,” Adel said.

Police are currently investigating the matter after a docket was opened at Lyttelton police station.
