Tshwane now delivers water 7 days a week to cholera-hit area
“We have heeded the call from our people, we are already implementing the seven-day a week water delivery in the area from the initial three days a week.”
Tshwane metro has already implemented the seven-days a week water delivery to cholera-hit Hammanskraal.
This was confirmed by MMC for utilities and regional operations Themba Fosi on Wednesday.
“We have heeded the call from our people, we are already implementing the seven-day a week water delivery in the area from the initial three days a week we had. In the informal area, it has always been seven-days a week, so it’s still that way,” Fosi said.
Recently parliamentary constituency officer Kottiti Aphane told the MMC and metro officials that the Hammanskraal community could no longer wait another five years for the municipality to resolve the Rooiwal water treatment problem.
Aphane questioned why the metro would reduce the number of days water tankers delivered water to the area.
“Now the number of days has been reduced to three, what about people who go to work? Our people are struggling because you go to work and when you come back there’s no water and the water tankers have long gone,” he exclaimed.
METRO CHECKING WATER TANKERS FOR PERMITS
To clamp down on people selling water to the community, Tshwane metro police (TMPD) will check all tankers transporting water for a permit.
In a communique issued on Tuesday, the municipality said it was made aware by the community that there were people selling water from tankers to the residents.
The municipality cautioned residents against consuming that water, urging them to instead consume water from its official suppliers.
“Residents are cautioned not to buy or drink water from these tankers. The water is untested and is not safe for drinking,” the metro said in a statement.
The water provided by the metro’s tankers is reported to be safe for drinking.
A series of tests have confirmed water from the metro’s tankers cholera-free.
Authorities announced the cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal and surrounding areas last weekend.
Stool tests from locals confirmed the outbreak.
