Police arrest ‘taxi association members’ for possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition

The police have discovered 52 unlicensed firearms and 610 ammunition during the stop-and-search operation that were conducted in the past weekend.

Three men alleged to be members of a taxi association patrol squad were arrested in Centurion on Monday, June 12.

The three men were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

According to police taxi violence task team, it received information that members of a taxi association patrol squad carrying unlicensed firearms were blocking Olievenhoutbosch Road, Centurion.

The team asked for backup from the highway patrol unit then proceeded to the scene, where the men were intercepted.

“The police found three pistols that were loaded with ammunition abandoned in the nearby bushes,” said Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo.

Masondo said the three suspects were arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The suspects will be profiled, and the firearms taken for ballistics tests to establish if they were not used in the commission of any crime.

“The police have discovered 52 unlicensed firearms and 610 [rounds of] ammunition during the stop-and-search operations last weekend.

“This resulted in us as the police to continue to be committed to rid the streets of illegal firearms in the whole of Gauteng.

“The public is therefore also encouraged to report anyone known to have possession of an illegal firearm to the police,” said Masondo.

The residents are said to report the crimes via #MySAPS app or by calling the Crime-Stop number 08600 10111.

The lieutenant further said the callers are allowed to remain anonymous, and that the information received will be treated with confidentiality.
