An employee at a vehicle dealership in Gezina was arrested by the Tshwane flying squad after he allegedly took a car for a drive without any permission and knocked over a pedestrian in a hit-and-run incident.
But not before he smashed into a generator at a petrol station while trying to elude the police officers pursuing him.
A private security company alerted the Soshanguve SAPS about the hit-and-run, according to police spokesperson Sergeant Alfred Legodi.
It was reported that the driver knocked over a pedestrian and fled from the scene towards Soshanguve, north of Pretoria.
The suspect was driving a blue Ford Eco Sport at a very high speed.
SUSPECT LOST CONTROL
The local police called in their flying squad colleagues, who responded by staking out the vehicle on the R80 towards the Soshanguve entrance into block L.
“The high-speed chase ensued into the Mabopane Etsoseng towards Morula casino,” said Legodi.
The suspect lost control of the vehicle at the Total filling station at Morula.
“He then crashed into an outdoor generator and caused serious damage and a power outage,” Legodi said.
The car owner was located and claimed that the Ford Eco Sport was taken without the owner’s consent.
“The information suggested that the suspect, an employee at a vehicle dealership at Gezina, took the car without permission.”
The suspect, from block C Mabopane, had minor injuries due to the crash and was taken to Odi Hospital under arrest.
The garage owner will open a case of use without the owner’s consent.
The suspect is facing charges of using without consent, hit-and-run, reckless and negligent driving as well as driving without a valid driver’s licence.
Legodi said more charges might be added depending on the victim’s situation.
He will appear in court soon.
