Clean-up hub helps to rehabilitate 50 drug addicts
The hub hopes to inspire the youth through initiatives like soup kitchens and educational outreaches.
On Monday, October 2, the Clean-up Hub in Soshanguve took 50 drug addicts in for rehabilitation.
The initiative was a partnership between the hub and Limpopo Gospel Experience, together with former boxing world champion, Ditau Molefyane.
The event kicked off with addicts being treated to soup organised by the partners on the day.
Founder of the hub, Reikhutsitse Malala, said they decided to host a soup kitchen and also partner with Limpopo Gospel Experience to inspire youth.
“The event aimed to get the drug users to meet celebrities face-to-face, so they can be inspired to look at things differently and try to kick the habit,” Malala said.
Francis Letsoalo, Limpopo Gospel Experience founder, said his company always helped and supported initiatives such as this one.
He found it befitting to partner with the hub, as they continued to spread the gospel and pray for drug users to kick the habit.
“We are so happy to partner here so we can change people’s lives. The gospel artists also enjoyed the experience and were exposed first-hand to how serious the drug addiction problem is,” Letsoalo said.
Molefyane, who also attended the event, said he was overwhelmed by the experience in the township.
He said while they were serving soup to the addicts, he had a chance to speak to them and realised that some were talented and educated young men.
“Most of them can still turn their lives around. It’s not too late for them to kick the habit and pursue their dreams. They are still young and are our future leaders. As an older generation, we need to assist them to protect our future,” he said.
One of the addicts seeking help, Bongani Mahlangu, said the high unemployment issue was the reason the majority of young people like himself were seeking entertainment from drugs.
“Because I was idling, it was a pastime before it became an addiction.
“There are hundreds of us here who need help. We are just glad there are people who still remember us and encourage us to kick the habit,” he said.
According to Rehab Helper, drug abuse and addiction is a big challenge in South Africa, affecting individuals, families, and communities across the country.
The organisation says abuse of drugs such as dagga, methamphetamine, and opioids has increased in recent years, which has also led to a rise in crime, poverty, and health problems.
Addiction also plays a big role in the worsening poverty, as many individuals addicted to drugs are struggling to support themselves and their families.
