‘Bogus doctor’ rearrested after being on the run for days

Since the suspect’s arrest, police have managed to attach his property and a 2023 VW Golf GTI, believed to have been accumulated as proceeds of crime.

Gauteng police have rearrested a suspected bogus doctor who recently had escaped custody.

Lyttelton police have been on the hunt for the escaped suspect known as Dr. Kingsley Leeto Chele or Dr. KJ Ncube, since his court appearance on October 2.

Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the accused was rearrested early in the morning of October 16 in Vosloorus.

“The arrest was a result of information and a tip-off received from one of the media houses following a media statement issued about the wanted fugitive. The management of the police in Gauteng appreciates the role played by the media in particular and the community in general in the fight against crime.”

Masondo said the bogus doctor, whose country of birth has yet to be confirmed, was expected to appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on October 17.

“A charge of escaping from custody will be added to the charges he was already facing.”

Masondo said the suspect was arrested as he had been masquerading as a doctor and targetting women.

“The police in Lyttleton, Tshwane, launched a manhunt for the escaped accused named Kingsley Leeto Chele, allegedly a Facebook con artist.

“He targets women by misrepresenting himself as a doctor or pharmacist and scamming them of their hard-earned money.”

Masondo said the bogus doctor would contact health professionals on Facebook and engage them, pretending to seek investors.

He said his modus operandi involved swindling his victims out of thousands of Rand for nonexistent projects.

“He was arrested by the police on October 2 on two cases of fraud registered in Sunnyside and Klipgat in June.”

Chele’s was denied bail when he last appeared in the Pretoria magistrate’s court, and he was being held in custody until his next scheduled court appearance on October 17.

Masondo said Chele however, managed to escape when police were cataloguing his household items at his residence.

He said he had been on the run since.

He added that police managed to seize some of Chele’s assets through the asset forfeiture unit on October 11. He said property and a 2023 VW Golf GTI were attached, as they were believed to have been accumulated from proceeds of his crimes.

“The police have registered a case of escape from lawful custody at SAPS Honeydew.”

Anyone with information is requested to contact the investigating officer, Captain MS Motolla, on 082 715 9583 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
