Tshwane sets aside R2m for local writers

The metro aims to empower local authors as it stocks up its libraries.

Tshwane has set aside about R2-million to promote and develop local authors.

MMC for community and social development services Peggy de Bruin said the metro had already begun the project.

“A total of 21 884 copies were procured, of which 2 374 are from Tshwane-based authors.

In executing our objective of promoting and profiling local content and encouraging the equitable development of all South African languages,” De Bruin said.

She called on all local authors to visit any public library to register.

According to the MMC, this forms part of the metro’s book selection drive to encourage local authors to register on the database.

“I am pleased to inform Tshwane residents that, on October 13, city library, heritage and information services embarked on a book-selection process at all 62 [its] libraries.”

De Bruin said for the libraries to keep up with the latest publication of new information resources, they needed to add new stock to their collections, such as books and audio-visual material, regularly.

The metro said the acquisition of library books was funded by the Gauteng library services grant to the tune of R7.3-million..

Here are the subject fields and titles that can be found in various libraries under the following formats:
