Tshwane police arrested over 910 people for various crimes over the past weekend.
This was as the district police embarked on a high-density operation that kick-started in Sunnyside.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johann van Dyk said during the operation police confiscated three illegal firearms.
Van Dyk said the weekend’s operation was the police’s show of force and commitment to making sure the community was safe.
“Ga-Rankuwa police also conducted a crime operation, leading to the arrest of 14 undocumented immigrants and nine spaza shops were inspected and subsequently closed. The Department of Health issued four notices and confiscated for disposal several expired food,” the spokesperson added.
He said Operation Shanela began in the early hours of Thursday in Loate and Mabopane respectively.
“Collaborative efforts involving multiple stakeholders resulted in the apprehension of 26 undocumented immigrants, one person for possession of illicit cigarettes, leading to the confiscation of 1 240 loose cigarettes.
A roadblock during the operation resulted in the issuance of 227 Aarto infringement notices, valued at R40 840,” said Van Dyk.
According to police, the operation also resulted in 24 premises being searched as well as 714 individuals, and 528 vehicles with 29 vehicles inspected to ensure they were not stolen.
“Fifteen liquor outlets were inspected, nine closed for contravening the Liquor Act, leading to the confiscation of thousands of liquor.
Five second-hand goods dealers were inspected and fined for contravention of the Second-hand Goods Act.”
Van Dyk said the success of the operations was achieved through collaboration among multiple stakeholders, including the departments of home affairs, labour, correctional services and community safety, crime prevention wardens, Gauteng traffic and Tracker.
