Tshwane bus services continue to operate despite intimidation attempts

All routes are running according to schedule, apart from the Olievenhoutbosch route.

Tshwane bus commuters can breathe a sigh of relief as the service continues to operate despite intermittent signs of intimidation.

The metro communications team confirmed that its fleet was on the road ferrying customers to different destinations within the city.

“Our bus services are still being rendered to our clients. Everything is still running according to schedule,” the media team said.

The team, however, said the Olievenhoutbosch route would remain suspended until further notice, following last week’s incident in which a bus was set alight.

According to reports at the time, the bus driver was held at gunpoint and ordered to leave the bus, which was later set alight.

MMC for roads and transport Katlego Mathebe said the Olievenhoutbosch shift would be temporarily suspended until the police are done with their investigation.

Previously the metro had raised concern over the slow pace of the investigations of the cases it had opened.

To date, the metro said it had opened about 50 cases ranging from attempted murder to intimidation.

During the return of the service, mayor Cilliers Brink had promised to keep it running and ensure both the safety of the passengers and that of the drivers was a priority.

“We are fighting hard to keep these Tshwane buses on the road to serve our residents who can’t afford high taxi fares,” Brink added.

Mathebe urged the security cluster to work tirelessly to make sure all perpetrators were brought to book and face the full might of the law.

Metro workers are engaged in a protracted wage strike that has gone on for three months.

In July, the labour court declared the strike action unlawful and unprotected.
