Stabbed Pretoria cyclist now recovering well in hospital
Doctors’ believe Strydom will make a full recovery, as his condition keeps on improving by the day.
Freddy Strydom, a 57-year-old cyclist, who was stabbed over his bicycle on Saturday morning in Centurion is currently recovering well in hospital.
Strydom was admitted to the ICU after a blade missed his abdominal aorta by 2mm, prompting doctors to perform internal surgery and drainage, as he had suffered internal bleeding.
His daughter Rene Le Grange said her father’s condition has improved compared to when he was first admitted on Saturday.
She said her father was stabbed next to his spine and the doctors said he was lucky to be alive.
Le Grange said the doctors believe he will make a full recovery, as his condition keeps on improving by the day.
She believed he would be back on his feet in no time.
Le Grange said the doctors needed to keep an eye on him for a few days before he could be discharged under home care.
Strydom was stabbed during a robbery where three men attacked him and stole his Specialised S Works E-bike which is very expensive.
The Midstream Estate resident was cycling with a group of 12 others when three men pounced on him between the R21 and M18 in Centurion.
The other cyclists heard screams and turned back, only to find Strydom on the ground and bleeding.
Le Grange said the cyclists saw three men running into the bushes with the bicycle.
“An ambulance was called but due to the remote route they were cycling, the ambulance couldn’t reach them. Fortunately, one cyclist went back to fetch his bakkie which he used to transport my father to the hospital,” she said.
Strydom was stabbed with a big self-made blade at about half an arm’s length next to his spine, creating an 8cm laceration.
La Grange said the family was grateful for the support and love they were getting.
She pleaded with anyone with information that might help to find the suspects to contact her.
“Anyone who sees someone selling a Specialized S Works E-bike, I urge you to report the matter,” she said.
