Heatwave expected to continue until Tuesday

Tshwane temperatures this weekend are expected to reach 36ºC on Saturday and 34ºC on Sunday.

Pretoria residents can expect the ongoing heatwave to continue to last until Tuesday, the South African Weather Services warned.

The SA weather service (Saws) recently issued an advisory that the heatwave prediction has been extended to November 28 over the central and northeastern parts of the country including the southern parts of the Free State from Sunday, November 26.

“Heatwave conditions with persistently high temperatures exceeding average maxima are expected over the central and eastern parts of the Free State, North West, north-eastern Northern Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga including in the southern parts of the Free State from Sunday,” Saws advised in a statement.

Pretoria residents have been experiencing a wave of persistently high temperatures since Sunday, November 19, which had been expected to subside on Wednesday.

Tshwane temperatures this weekend are expected to reach 36°C on Saturday and 34°C on Sunday.

The Saws advises residents to:

– Stay hydrated (drink water)

– Limit outdoor activity (especially during the hottest time of the day)

– Wear loose clothing

– Remain in the shade if possible

– Keep an eye on vulnerable individuals, do not leave children or animals in a parked vehicle

– Avoid strenuous physical activity if possible

– Move to the coolest room in the home, especially at night

ER24 also offers the following tips:

– Take it easy and don’t overexert yourself

– Only go outside during the coolest time of the day, usually early in the morning and evening

– When outside, seek out shade

– Take a cool shower

– Learn to recognise the signs of heat stroke, which include headache, nausea and dizziness.
