Local yarn lovers enjoy the first Stoepmark of year
One of the crafters, Hannelle Victor’s work was displayed at the Vogue Knitting Live show in New York on the same day.
Knotty Habit recently hosted its first Stoepmark of the year at R&R Bistro in Villieria, Centurion where knitters and crocheters from all walks of life came together.
In May it will mark five years since the Knotty Habit has hosted a community of yarn lovers every last Saturday of the month.
Owner of Knotty Habit Miensie van Zyl says Covid-19 increased the amount of time people spent on knitting and crocheting.
The community defies stereotypical conventions. “As you can see here it’s not just for old people. It’s the biggest offence to say that it’s an ‘old people’s pastime’, it’s not. We have all sorts of people that come to join us, ranging from 25 to people in their 90s,” Van Zyl said.
One such crafter is Hannelle Victor who had one of her designs featured on the runway of the Vogue Knitting Live competition in New York that was taking place on the same day.
“I started knitting when I was very young, probably 20, 30 years ago, but I only started designing three or four years ago. It’s very relaxing, I have a stressful job working in finance so it’s nice to go home in the evenings and just relax and put your mind on something else,” Victor said.

Van Zyl says she looks forward to the yarn festival taking place in Cape Town in March.
All yarn lovers, novice and experienced, are welcome every last Saturday of the month to enjoy Stoepmark.
