Crime operation sees over 350 suspects arrested in Mamelodi
Police also conducted patrols in crime hotspots, resulting in the arrest of 23 suspects for various criminal offenses.
Efforts by the SAPS in combating crime have resulted in arrests for crimes including assault, rape, and attempted murder.
According to spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, “SAPS in Tshwane, in collaboration with other law enforcement partners, conducted a successful crime clampdown operation in Mamelodi on August 23.”
He said the operation, led by Tshwane District Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine, resulted in the arrest of more than 350 suspects.
Van Dyk said members of the SAPS, the Department of Home Affairs, the TMPD, the Gauteng Traffic Police, the National Traffic Police, and the Department of Community Safety supported the operation.
“Operation Shanela continues to form part of the Tshwane District’s ongoing commitment to maintaining zero tolerance towards crime, and strengthening community safety and trust,” he said.

Detectives arrested 362 suspects for a range of criminal offences.
“This includes 58 for gender-based violence-related offences, five for attempted murder, three for armed robbery, three for rape, 25 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, with four suspects arrested for hijacking,” he said.
He said in addition, 23 undocumented foreign nationals were detained and handed over to immigration authorities, while one person was arrested and fined for employing undocumented individuals.
“Furthermore, 11 crime hotspots were patrolled, leading to the arrest of 23 more suspects,” said Van Dyk.

Van Dyk stated that 16 suspects were arrested for public drinking, one for being drunk in public and one person for illegal gambling.
“Five more suspects were arrested for drug possession and dealing, with 42 bags containing various drugs, and cash that was found in their possession was confiscated,” he said.
He added that liquor enforcement efforts saw 30 outlets inspected, of which eight were closed for non-compliance, and alcohol was seized.
A total of 920 people and more than 450 vehicles were searched.
“This resulted in 44 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol and 66 traffic infringement notices issued, amounting to R16 600,” he added.
The SAPS urges the public to continue reporting suspicious activities by contacting Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or using the MySAPS App.
