Eight-hour water shutdown planned for Hatfield and surrounds this week

The interruption is expected to last for eight hours on Thursday.

Residents in Hatfield and surrounding areas face a water shutdown this week.

Metrro spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo, said planned maintenance work on the Loftus bulk water line will take place on August 28 between 08:00 and 16:00.

He said on the day, the team will conduct a CCTV inspection and install valves.

“This is in preparation for repairs to a leak on a 250mm pipeline in the area.”

Mashigo said the shutdown is estimated to last for at least eight hours.

The following areas will be affected:
– Brooklyn
– Colbyn
– Hatfield
– Parts of Menlo Park
– Muckleneuk

He also said roaming water tankers will be available in the affected areas during the interruption.

Mashigo reminded residents of the following water-conservation measures:
– Do not water or irrigate gardens with hosepipes or sprinkler systems between 06:00 and 18:00.
– Do not wash vehicles with hosepipes.
– Do not fill swimming pools.
– Use grey water to water gardens and flush toilets.
– Report water leaks, burst pipes and all incidents where water is wasted.
– Install water-saving devices.

He urged residents to continue to make the following water-conservation measures part of their normal lifestyle:
– Install a low-flow shower head and tap aerators where possible.
– Use a dual-flush toilet cistern.
– Plant indigenous or drought-resistant shrubs in the garden.
– Use a broom instead of a hosepipe when cleaning driveways or patios.
– Collect rainwater to re-use in the garden or wash the car.
– Cover the swimming pool to reduce water evaporation.
– Take a shower rather than a bath.
– Close a running tap while brushing teeth or shaving.
– Regularly check toilets and taps for leaks.

To report water-related incidents, residents are urged to use the following numbers:
– No water supply, burst water pipes, leaking meters or blocked street sewers: 012 358 9999 or 080 1111 556
– Illegal water connections: 012 358 9060.
