Another charge added in Dubai tavern killing case as accused abandons bail

Police arrested the accused in Carousel View in the early hours of August 22 after he posted the reasons for killing his ex-girlfriend on social media.

The case of Lazarus Lito Anthonio (26), a Mozambican national from Carousel View, accused of the brutal Dubai Tavern killing, has taken a new turn.

This after prosecutors added another charge against him during his court appearance at the Temba Magistrate’s Court on September 5.

Anthonio, who was already facing charges of murder and attempted murder, is now also charged with contravening a protection order.

NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the additional charge stems from a court order issued on August 12 in favour of his ex-girlfriend, 20-year-old Kgaugelo Marota.

She said the order was to prohibit him from physically abusing her or entering her residence.

“Despite this legal protection, it is alleged that on August 21, Anthonio went to Dubai Tavern in Maubane village, where Marota was with a friend, and stabbed her multiple times. She was declared dead on the scene.

“The accused then allegedly went to his home, where he stabbed his current 20-year-old girlfriend several times. She survived the attack and was rushed to the hospital, where she is still receiving treatment.”

Police arrested Anthonio in the early hours of August 22 after he posted the reasons for his actions on social media.

During the court proceedings, District Prosecutor Sharon Nkandimeng added the new charge, leading Anthonio to provisionally abandon his bail application.

The case has now been postponed to October 17 for further investigations.
