Thousands flock to Oktoberfest to enjoy German beers and food

The Oktoberfest celebrates the rich heritage of German culture every year and raises funds for the Deutsche Internationale Schule Pretoria.

Over 10 000 people descended on the annual Deutsche Internationale Schule Pretoria to attend the iconic 47th anniversary of Pretoria’s original Oktoberfest.

Anja Schlüter from Deutsche Internationale Schule said the original Oktoberfest is an annual event from September 11 to 13.

Schlüter said the festival kicked off on Thursday, with VIP guests including South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, German Ambassador Andreas Peschke, DSP Principal Manuel Hass, and Schulverein Chairman Dieter Kohlmeyer.

Over three days, tens of thousands of visitors enjoyed live music from Germany’s Frankenräuber Oompah Band, and contemporary acts Desmond and the Tutus, Wonderboom, Plum, Lunae Lane, Later Alligator, Cantina Brass, DJ Maeztro and DJ Kerry-Anne Allerston.

Schlüter said the original Oktoberfest event upholds the rich heritage of German culture and serves as a crucial fundraiser for the school.

The event catered to all age groups with entertainment galore for kids and teenagers, which featured games, rides, and engaging activities.

George Hayes, who came to the Oktoberfest with his family and friends, said he loves the Oktoberfest.

He said they enjoyed the food, music and drinks.

Arthur Rüsch said he attends the Oktoberfest annually and never misses it.

Schlüter added that the festival-goers can savour traditional German cuisine, including Eisbein, Schnitzel, Kassler, Bockwurst, plus treats like Brezel and Lebkuchen.

The lively Biergarten featured Heineken and local craft beers. Family-friendly activities, market stalls and the Oktoberfest Queen Seonaid Nagel with princesses Caroline Laubscher, Alina Tittmann, and Simnikiwe Mvubu bring colour and festivity for all ages.
