New Ward 10 councillor vows to tackle service delivery

Residents are hopeful that the new ward councillor will meet their demands, especially the continuation of the Lusaka Clinic project.

The ANC has managed to retain its ward in the far east of Mamelodi with a whopping 51.55% of votes, following the municipal by-elections on October 1.

Newly appointed Ward 10 ANC councillor Isaac Sekele garnered 2 214 votes, beating the EFF, which came second with 982 votes. The MK Party was third with 578 votes, and the DA last with 493 votes.

Sekele, who has been a resident of Stoffel Park for 15 years, said there is no time to waste.

“The people have spoken with their votes, and it’s time to deliver.”

The by-elections came after the previous ward councillor, Thabang Masemola, was gunned down by an unknown man outside a tuck shop on the main road in Stoffel Park in the far east of Mamelodi on July 8.

Sekele promised to deliver basic services to the residents of Ward 10, adding that he will be be working with opposition parties.

He said there are a lot of challenges in the ward that need to be addressed.

“The issue of electricity in Lusaka must be prioritised, Stoffel Park main roads need to be fixed and lastly, the relocation process for Riverside informal settlement,” he said.

The Lusaka Clinic Project is also at the top of the list of service delivery to Ward 10 residents.

Riverside informal settlement resident, Jack Mathebula, hopes the newly elected councillor will meet residents’ demands.

“There is a lot that needs to be done in Ward 10. We have a challenge of roads, crime, water, electricity, and not forgetting the Lusaka clinic project,” he said.

Mathebula pleaded with the new councillor to prioritise the clinic, adding that work on it must resume as soon as possible.

“We can’t have senior citizens waking up in the early hours for medical healthcare,” he said.

The clinic project, worth millions of rands, is currently on hold.

Beauty Mhlanga pleaded with the councillor to tackle the issue of crime.

“There is a lot of crime and gangsters in the area.

“We are pleading with the councillor for more police visibility and a mini police station,” she said.
