Department warns parents against school placement scams

The Gauteng Department of Education has raised alarm over fraudsters posing as officials and demanding bribes from desperate parents seeking school placements for 2026.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has warned parents to be on high alert after reports emerged of a fraudster posing as an official and soliciting money in exchange for school placements.

According to GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona, someone known only as ‘Godfrey’ has allegedly been contacting parents, claiming he can secure spots for their children at Gauteng public schools for the 2026 academic year for a fee.

Mabona said this person does not work for the GDE, and that no official or employee is authorised to demand payment to facilitate or speed up the placement process.

He categorically states there is no person by the name of ‘Godfrey’ employed by the GDE in Tshwane, or any of the district offices, who is responsible for placements.

“Parents are strongly cautioned not to pay anyone who claims they can secure a school placement.”

Mabona reiterated the warning, saying fraudsters often exploit the anxiety that comes with school admissions.

“We urge parents to remain vigilant and to avoid anyone who claims to represent the department in exchange for money,” said Mabona.

“No individual can fast-track or influence the placement process. All placements are handled strictly through the official GDE Online Admissions System.”

Mabona added that parents who fall prey to such scams are paying for nothing and should immediately report suspicious activity to the police or to the GDE Contact Centre.

He said criminals take advantage of this period every year, knowing many parents are desperate to secure spaces for their children at preferred schools.
