Operation Shanela nets over 300 arrests in Atteridgeville and Laudium
Among those arrested were three people for illegal gambling and five gambling machines were seized.

SAPS officers and supporting departments arrested 328 suspects for various offences in the Atteridgeville and Laudium policing precincts during an Operation Shanela recently.
Detective teams spearheaded the operation as they traced and apprehended 282 suspects for various criminal offences, including three for murder, five for attempted murder, seven for armed robbery, and three for rape.
Early on November 6, 34 undocumented immigrants were detained, as two operation teams conducted roadblocks, compliance inspections, and crime-combatting duties in the aforementioned precincts.
One suspect was also arrested and fined for hiring undocumented immigrants.
A total of 498 persons and 264 vehicles were searched during the operation.
Police further executed 12 search warrants and conducted patrols at 47 identified hotspots.
Fourteen liquor outlets were inspected for compliance with the Liquor Act, five outlets were closed and liquor was confiscated.
“Additionally, three people were arrested for illegal gambling, and five gambling machines were seized. One individual was also arrested for possession of a stolen motor vehicle, after a Mercedes-Benz reported stolen in Pretoria West in October was found in his possession,” said SAPS spokesperson, Captain Johan van Dyk.
Traffic officials issued 210 AARTO infringement notices amounting to R71 250, while 11 vehicles were impounded for non-compliance with the Road Traffic Act.
The operation was planned and executed under the command of the District Commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Samuel Thine, and included members from various SAPS units across the district.
Thine expressed his appreciation to all participating departments and stakeholders for their continued collaboration and commitment.
He reaffirmed the SAPS’s dedication to ensuring the safety and security of all Tshwane residents, stating that lawlessness will not be tolerated.
The multidisciplinary team further comprised officials from the Department of Home Affairs, the TMPD, Gauteng Traffic Police, the Department of Community Safety, and Community Policing Forums.
