Crime-prevention blitz strengthens safety in the north

According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, detectives successfully executed a focused track-and-trace operation, leading to the arrest of 252 wanted suspects linked to a range of offences.

A large-scale crime-prevention operation across the northern parts of Tshwane has resulted in over 300 arrests, the closure of non-compliant liquor outlets, seizure of drugs and an unlicensed firearm, and detention of undocumented foreign nationals.

The co-ordinated blitz on November 15 forms part of the police’s intensified festive-season safety campaign.

Led by Tshwane District Commissioner, Major-General Samuel Thine, the multidisciplinary operation brought together SAPS units and law-enforcement partners, including the departments of Home Affairs, Community Safety and Correctional Services, and the CPF.

The joint effort targeted high-crime zones in the Rietgat and Mabopane policing precincts, where officers have been working to curb violent crime, drug trafficking, and social disorder.

According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, detectives successfully executed a focused track-and-trace operation, leading to the arrest of 252 wanted suspects linked to a range of criminal offences.

These included suspects connected to five murder cases, six attempted murders, 36 cases of assault, 26 incidents of malicious damage to property, and 74 suspects wanted for gender-based violence.

He said 10 suspects linked to rape cases were also apprehended.

“Two operational teams supported by a roadblock unit conducted high-visibility patrols, stop and searches, and compliance checks across hotspot areas.

“Officers searched 531 individuals and 206 vehicles, while verifying the status of 33 others to determine whether they had been reported stolen,” said Van Dyk.

He said the operation also saw a heightened focus on undocumented migration and illicit substances.

Police detained 22 undocumented foreign nationals, handing them over to immigration authorities for processing.

“Three suspects were arrested for drug possession and dealing after officers recovered 30 sachets of crystal methamphetamine and 8 sachets of nyaope, along with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“Liquor outlets came under strict scrutiny, with officers conducting compliance checks at 20 establishments.”

Ten outlets were shut down for violating the Liquor Act, and police confiscated 574 bottles of liquor and three gambling machines. Three people were issued fines for public drinking.

Another suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and Van Dyk explained that investigations are underway to determine the origins of the firearm and whether it can be linked to other criminal activities in the region.

Thine commended all participating departments, reiterating SAPS’s commitment to restoring stability and safety in communities historically affected by persistent crime.

“We will continue to intensify our presence and ensure that criminal activities are decisively confronted,” he added.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and to continue reporting suspicious activities to their nearest police station or via the Crime Stop hotline.
