Church Square gets prepped for Farmers Market

The market expects to accommodate over 100 vendors, including farmers, artists and crafters to showcase their products to potential investors.

Ahead of the metro’s Entrepreneurs and Farmers Market Day in Church Square next week, Tshwane Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, led a clean-up of the historical landmark in preparation for welcoming more than 100 traders.

The Market Day, scheduled for November 26, will allow various sectors, including farmers, artists, crafters, and many other industries, to showcase their products to both the public and potential investors.

Moya said the municipality is committed to leveraging the city’s assets to encourage economic activity and assures residents that this market will be the first of many to be hosted at Church Square.

“We will be hosting traders from the agricultural sector, from the manufacturing sector, we’ve got arts and crafts, but also we will be selling food on-site,” she said.

The mayor said they are targeting the informal traders and the township economy sectors.

“Of course, as a government, when we say we want to support a sector, it goes with what kind of platforms and assets we can provide to the sector, for the sector to thrive,” she said.

“We have availed Church Square as one of those, where once in a while, whether once a quarter, we want our traders to be given an opportunity and a platform to come and use Church Square.”

The mayor was joined by the MMC for Community Safety, Alderman Hannes Coetzee, and the MMC for Environment and Agriculture, Obakeng Ramabodu.

“We want to bring back Church Square with different restaurants and tourism activities. Under our government, Church Square will be revived, including the removal of the Paul Kruger statue to the nearest museum,” Ramabodu said.
