Contact crimes go down in north police precincts
Contact crimes, which include offences like murder, sexual assault, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), saw notable shifts in the north.
Police stations in the north of Pretoria have shown decreases in contact crimes in the latest quarterly crime stats.
The statistics indicate the number of crimes reported to the country’s 1,163 police stations from July to September.
Contact crimes, which include offences like murder, sexual assault, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), saw notable shifts in the north.
Pretoria North
A decrease of 16.1% has been reported in contact crimes.
Robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 35 counts (from 78 to 43 cases), and assault cases decreased by four counts (from 21 to 17).
Assault with intent to cause GBH cases increased by nine counts (27 to 36), and rape cases increased by two counts, up to four reported.
One count of sexual assault was recorded, compared to the two reported in the previous quarter.
Carjackings decreased by 14 counts to three cases, and robberies at non-residential premises increased by six counts to 11.
Robberies at residential premises decreased by two to five.
No cases of arson were reported, and with malicious damage to property cases, 42 were reported, a four-count increase from the previous quarter.
Burglary at non-residential premises increased by four counts of up to 16 cases, and at residential properties, decreased by 10 cases.
Motor vehicle and motorcycle theft cases increased by 12 counts.
Detected illegal firearm and ammunition possession crimes decreased by five counts from seven, and 26 more counts of driving under the influence (DUI) were recorded from the 66 in the last quarter.
Akasia
The Akasia SAPS reported a 2.0% decrease in contact crimes, with 13 attempted murder cases reported.
Assault with intent to cause GBH increased by 36.6% (101 cases to 138), and cases of common assault decreased by 8.2% (196 to 180). Common robberies increased by 27 counts from zero, and murder cases increased by four counts, (now 18), while sexual offences decreased by 13 (now 31).
Cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances increased by 3.5%, from 170 cases to 176.
This quarter, 21 rapes were reported.
Carjackings increased by 56.3%, up to 50 reported cases and robberies at non-residential premises saw no difference, with 11 cases reported.
Sinoville
Contact crimes (crimes against people) saw a decrease of 1.8% this quarter.
Murder and sexual offences decreased by one count.
A total of 37 cases of assault GBH cases were reported, and common assault cases decreased by two counts (from 45 to 43).
Common robberies increased by five counts, with 16 cases reported this quarter and robberies with aggravating circumstances increased by four counts.
Three rape cases and three cases of sexual offences were reported.
No carjackings were reported this quarter, and 11 robberies at residential premises took place, while four robberies at non-residential premises were recorded.
Malicious damage to property cases decreased by 15 counts (from 40 to 25).
A total of seven cases of burglary at non-residential premises were recorded, and there was a decrease of 47 counts at residential premises, with 22 cases.
Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by 59 counts, with 46 cases reported during July and September this year.
Police detected two cases of illegal firearms and ammunition, compared to the three in the last quarter.
