West crime stats show stronger policing against thefts
The latest figures reflect improved prevention of property crimes, with declines in key categories like residential break-ins and vehicle-related thefts.

Police stations based in the west of Pretoria have seen improvements in property-related crimes, as reported in the latest batch of crime statistics published by the SAPS.
The recently released quarterly crime statistics for this financial year detail crimes reported from April – June and from July – September.
Across the Atteridgeville, Hercules, and Pretoria West police stations, a common theme is that the statistics regarding property-related crimes have improved.
This includes burglaries, stock thefts and vehicle-related thefts.
Atteridgeville
Atteridgeville Police Station saw a 4.9% increase in contact crimes (crimes against a person) this quarter, as the station recorded a sharp increase of 25 counts of attempted murder cases reported (previously 6).
Murder cases reported also increased by nine counts (14 up to 23), and three more counts of sexual offences were reported in this quarter compared to the previous quarter (28 up to 31).
Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) decreased by 3.2% (95 down to 92), common assault by 2.7% (150 down to 146), and robbery with aggravating circumstances dropped by 2.3% (128 down to 125).
No attempted sexual offences have been recorded for the past five quarters, while 31 rape cases were reported in this quarter, compared to 20 reported in the previous quarter.
No sexual assault cases were reported this quarter, a seven-count drop from the previous quarter, and no contact sexual offences were reported this quarter as well.
Carjacking cases reported increased by two counts (31 up to 33), and robberies at residential premises increased by four counts (19 up to 23), while two truck hijacking cases were reported (one more from the last quarter).
No robbery of cash-in-transit (CIT) or bank robberies have been reported in the previous five quarters, while robberies at non-residential premises decreased by nine counts (17 to 8).
Atteridgeville recorded a decrease in reported property-related crimes of 19.6%.
Both burglary at non-residential premises and theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle decreased by 2 counts, and theft out of or from motor vehicle cases decreased by seven counts (42 to 35).
Burglaries at residential premises decreased by 23.9% (71 down to 54), and no stock theft cases were reported.
Kidnapping decreased by three counts (25 to 22), and shoplifting decreased by nine counts (53 to 44).
All other thefts increased by 36.4% (107 to 146), commercial crime increased by 81.1% (37 to 67), while crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 11.9% (227 to 254 cases detected).
Hercules
Hercules Police Station recorded a 0.4% decrease in contact crimes, with murder cases and attempted murder cases decreasing by six (seven to one) and seven (14 to seven) counts, respectively.
Common assault decreased by 7.9% (101 to 93), and sexual offence cases reported remain constant at 11 cases.
Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased by 14.5% (62 to 71), assault with GBH increased by 8.5% (59 to 64), while common robbery increased by six counts (29 to 35).
Rape cases reported decreased by two counts (six to four), and no contact sexual offences were reported this quarter.
Sexual assault reports increased by three counts (four to seven), and no attempted sexual offences have been reported in the previous five quarters.
Twelve carjackings were reported this quarter (one count higher than the last), and robbery at non-residential buildings also had a one-count increase from the seven reported last quarter.
Four fewer truck hijackings were reported this quarter (five to one), and no CIT or bank robberies were reported in the previous five quarters.
No arson cases were reported, and malicious damage to property cases decreased by 14.8% (61 to 52).
Reported property-related crimes in Hercules decreased by 17.8%, with theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases significantly dropping by 22 counts (56 to 34), and theft out of or from motor vehicle cases by 13 counts (53 to 40).
Burglary at non-residential premises decreased by seven counts (17 to 10), though burglary at residential premises increased by 8.0% (75 to 81).
Crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 26.0% (104 to 131 cases detected), and all other thefts decreased by 52.9% (310 to 146).
Commercial crime increased by 31.7% (82 to 108), and 13 shoplifting cases were reported this quarter (one count lower).
Kidnapping cases decreased by a single count (17 to 16).
Pretoria West
Pretoria West Police Station recorded a significant decrease in contact crime as 13% fewer cases were reported this quarter.
Murder decreased by 2 counts (6 to 4), sexual offences by 6 counts (29 to 23), attempted murder by 3 counts (15 to 12), and common robbery by 14 counts (31 to 17).
Robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased by 14% (200 to 172), and assault with GBH by 9.1% (55 to 50).
Common assault was the only contact crime that recorded an increase of 1% (103 to 104).
No attempted sexual offences have been reported in the previous five quarters, and rape cases reported decreased by 10 counts (26 to 16).
Sexual assault cases increased by three counts (three to six), and a single count of contact sexual offence was reported (one count higher).
A total of 57 carjackings were reported in this and the previous quarters, while robbery at residential and non-residential premises decreased by three (15 to 12) and 14 (24 to 10) counts, respectively.
No CIT or bank robberies have been reported in the previous five quarters, though one truck hijacking and arson case was reported, compared to none last quarter.
Malcious damage to property decreased by 1.6% (62 to 61), while property-related crimes saw a 28.4% decrease as a whole.
Burglary at non-residential premises decreased by five counts (26 to 21), and theft of motor vehicles and motorcycle cases by 11 counts (55 to 44).
A single stock-theft case was reported, the first in five quarters, and theft out of or from motor vehicle cases, and burglary at residential premises decreased by 10.4% (77 to 69), and 47.8% (113 to 59), respectively.
Shoplifting cases decreased by 14 counts (25 to 11), and kidnapping by one count (25 to 24).
Crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 18.3% (109 to 129 cases detected), and all thefts not mentioned elsewhere decreased by 29.6% (213 to 150).
Commercial crime increased by 16.8% (107 to 125).
