100 homes in Rama City Ext 10 now connected to the grid

The project brings safe, legal and reliable power to residents in an underserved area, with more households set to benefit as the rollout continues.

The Tshwane metro has taken another step towards expanding access to basic services after officially electrifying 100 households in Rama City Ext 10, Phase 3, located in Region 1.

The electrification project, led by the metro’s Energy and Electricity Business Unit, saw the successful energising of three mini-substations as part of the municipality’s Electricity for All Programme.

The initiative targets informal settlements and aims to provide residents with safe, reliable and legal access to electricity.

MMC for Utility Services Frans Boshielo and Ward 31 Councillor Tshepo Kgatle both attended the switching on of the new infrastructure, marking a significant milestone for the community.

Boshielo said the project reflects the metro’s commitment to improving the living conditions of residents in previously underserved areas.

“Access to electricity is not a luxury but a basic service that restores dignity and improves the quality of life of our communities.

“Through the Electricity for All Programme, we are ensuring that households have safe and reliable power while also addressing the dangers associated with illegal connections,” he said.

Boshielo added that the programme also plays a critical role in protecting municipal infrastructure and strengthening revenue collection.

“Formalising electricity supply helps us reduce infrastructure vandalism, prevent electricity-related accidents and ensure the sustainability of our electricity network,” he noted.

The metro said the Rama City electrification project will be implemented in phases to ensure that the entire area is progressively connected and fully covered.

Once completed, more households are expected to benefit from legal electricity connections.

The metro reiterated its commitment to expanding access to electricity across all regions, stating that the Electricity for All Programme remains a key intervention in promoting safety, service delivery and socio-economic development in local communities.
