Hawks arrest woman over alleged R10 000 bribe to TMPD official
The Pretoria-based Serious Corruption Investigation unit arrested the woman after an undercover operation. The woman allegedly offered money if the official helped to secure her an appointment in the metro’s recruitment process.
A 22-year-old woman was arrested in the north of Pretoria on January 22, following an alleged attempt to bribe a senior TMPD official in connection with the municipality’s recruitment process.
According to Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Singo, the Pretoria-based Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) unit arrested the suspect on Thursday after an undercover operation linked to a corruption complaint.
Singo said the investigation stems from an incident that occurred on January 9, when a commissioner from the TMPD received an email from the suspect, who claimed to be an unsuccessful applicant in the Tshwane metro’s recruitment process.
“In the email, the suspect allegedly requested the commissioner’s assistance to secure her appointment and offered a gratification of R10 000 in exchange for facilitating the process,” he stated.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Pretoria Hawks SCI unit for further investigation.
Following the report, investigators planned an operation to verify the allegations and apprehend the suspect.
“On January 22, police carried out the operation at Wonderboom Junction Shopping Centre, where the suspect was arrested after she allegedly handed over an amount of R3 000 to the complainant,” said Singo.
He confirmed that the arrest occurred immediately after the money exchange.
The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, commended the SCI team for their swift response to the complaint.
Kadwa also urged public officials to report any acts of corruption to the Hawks without delay.
