Operation Shanela continues to deliver positive results

Police are continuing to combat and reduce crime across the capital city.

A total of 334 suspects were arrested, and two stolen vehicles were recovered in Mamelodi over the weekend.

The arrests came after police intensified their crime-combatting efforts through the ongoing Operation Shanela, on Saturday in the Mamelodi and Mamelodi East policing precincts.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Marinda Austin said these operations form part of the police’s ongoing commitment to combatting and reducing crime across the capital city.

Marinda said the operation was planned and executed under the command of the District Commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Samuel Thine.

Marinda said the team comprised officials from the Department of Home Affairs, the TMPD, the Department of Community Safety, and the CPFs.

“The detectives spearheaded the operation and apprehended 243 suspects for various criminal offences, including two for murder, two for attempted murder, three for armed robbery, and 48 for assault under the Domestic Violence Act,” said Marinda.

The operation consisted of three teams, deployed to conduct roadblocks, compliance inspections, and crime-combatting duties.

Marinda said these efforts resulted in the detention of 27 undocumented foreign nationals, who were handed over to immigration authorities.

Sixteen drunk driving arrests were made, and four people found in possession of drugs were arrested.

The operation was hailed as a success and led to a total of 990 persons and 354 vehicles being searched during the operation.

Marinda added that police visited nine identified hotspots, and eight liquor outlets were inspected for compliance with the Liquor Act. Four liquor outlets were closed after being found non-compliant, and alcohol was confiscated.

Thine expressed his appreciation to all participating departments and stakeholders for their continued collaboration and commitment.

He reaffirmed the police’s dedication to ensuring the safety and security of all Pretoria residents, stating that lawlessness will not be tolerated.
