Drivers cautioned after N4/R25 hitchhiker attacks
Bronkhorstspruit police spokesperson Constable Ramovha says suspects posing as hitchhikers allegedly strangle or restrain drivers before robbing them. Motorists travelling between Bronkhorstspruit, the metro and Emalahleni are urged to remain vigilant.
Motorists are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid picking up hitchhikers on the N4/R25 from Bronkhorstspruit towards Pretoria and Emalahleni.
This follows a rise in hijacking incidents linked to suspects posing as hitchhikers along these routes.
Bronkhorstspruit police spokesperson Constable Munyadziwa Cathrine Ramovha said suspects allegedly approach motorists under the pretext of seeking a lift.
Ramovha said it has been reported that suspects are requesting lifts from unsuspecting motorists and, once inside the vehicle, allegedly use a rope or similar object to strangle or restrain the driver.
“The victims are then robbed of their valuables, including cellphones, wallets, bank cards, and other personal belongings,” she explained.
Ramovha said motorists are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid picking up hitchhikers, particularly in isolated areas or during early morning and late evening hours.
“Criminals often target drivers who are travelling alone.”
She said in case of an emergency, victims are urged to contact the SAPS on 10111 or 071 676 6623.
Ramovha assured that the police have increased patrols in the affected areas, and investigations are ongoing.
“Community members with information that could assist the investigation are urged to contact Bronkhorstspruit police 071 676 6623 or use the Crime Stop number 08600 10111. All information will be treated with strict confidentiality.”
She said the police remain committed to ensuring the safety of all road users and urge the public to remain vigilant.
