Late Allende goal earns Sundowns gritty victory over AmaZulu
A resilient display and late strike saw the Brazilians overcome AmaZulu and return to the top of the league standings.
Masandawana claimed a hard-fought 1–0 Betway Premiership victory over AmaZulu FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday, grinding out the result through patience, discipline and a late breakthrough.
The decisive moment arrived in the 83rd minute when Marcelo Allende found the back of the net to finally separate the sides after a tightly contested encounter.
The win lifted Masandawana to the summit of the Betway Premiership standings, edging ahead on goals scored as the title race intensifies.
The visitors began confidently, circulating the ball early as AmaZulu sat deep.
Aubrey Modiba won a free kick in the third minute and delivered into the box, but the effort was deflected.
AmaZulu threatened in the eighth minute, only for Thapelo Morena to stand firm and clear the danger.
The Brazilians continued to probe through the middle, maintaining possession and patiently working openings.
In the 18th minute, Ndamane rose for a header, but his effort was saved and turned behind for a corner.
The Brazilians kept building with slick passing combinations, with Teboho Mokoena linking up play, while Matthews saw a chance cleared by defenders.
Morena was forced off in the 32nd minute, with Nuno Santos introduced as Sundowns maintained control of tempo approaching half-time.
Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced a brilliant save in the 41st minute to deny a dangerous opportunity from their opponents, ensuring the teams went into the break level.
Bafana Ba Style resumed with urgency after half-time.
Amazulu goalkeeper Darren Johnson was called into action early as Brayan León tested him from the edge of the box.
Matthews drove forward in the 51st minute before feeding Modiba, whose attempt to create inside the box was disrupted.
At the other end, Jayden Adams tracked back with pace on the hour mark to break up a dangerous AmaZulu counterattack.
The Brazilians kept pushing. Matthews set up Mokoena in the 64th minute, but his effort drifted wide.
Shortly after, Sundowns intensified their pressure, with León forcing a save from Johnson before Modiba tried his luck from range, sending his effort over the bar.
Substitutions followed as Matthews made way for Iqraam Rayners, while León was replaced by Lebo Mothiba.
Allende nearly broke the deadlock in the 80th minute when he rattled the crossbar after a strong build-up and clever return pass from Nuno Santos, but the defence cleared.
Three minutes later, he made no mistake. Sundowns’ sustained pressure finally paid off as Allende struck to give the visitors a deserved lead.
AmaZulu pushed in the closing stages, with five minutes of added time signalled, but Masandawana remained resolute to secure all three points.
This victory provided a timely response following Sundowns’ recent setback in the Nedbank Cup, where they suffered a 2–0 defeat to TS Galaxy FC in the Round of 16 at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium on February 21.
First-half goals from the Mpumalanga side ended Bafana Ba Style’s cup campaign, making the league triumph in Durban an important bounce-back result.
With renewed momentum and a return to the top of the standings, the Brazilians now shift focus to maintaining their advantage as the season enters a decisive phase.
