Two cable theft suspects nabbed in Hercules
A scrapyard owner was arrested for the cables, and another for attempting to pay a R5 000 bribe for the owner's release.
After receiving a tip-off from the public, the TMPD Cable Theft Unit arrested two men in Hercules, west of Pretoria, in possession of stolen copper cables and bribery.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said, based on information received about a scrapyard suspected of buying stolen copper cables, officers from the Cable Theft Unit responded. The copper cables were found hidden inside maize meal bags during the search on March 3.

Another suspect reportedly attempted to bribe officers on the way to the local police station to avoid the arrest of the yard owner; however, this only added to their mounting woes.
“The scrapyard owner failed to provide a valid explanation or documentation for the possession of the copper cables, leading to his arrest. While transporting him to the local police station, officers were intercepted by a male driving a Ford Ranger who attempted to bribe them with R5 000 to release the arrested suspect. The individual was arrested on charges of bribery, and both suspects were detained at the local police station awaiting court appearance,” Mahamba said.

The TMPD’s Chief of Police, Commissioner YCR Faro, commended the officers involved for their diligence and commitment, and also highlighted the significance of community co-operation in combating crime, emphasising that such partnerships are crucial for the success of law enforcement efforts.
Residents are urged to report suspicious activity to the TMPD on 012 358 7095/7096 or the dedicated Cable Theft Unit at 012 358 1550.
