Hundreds arrested during major crime prevention operation in Tshwane

Authorities arrested wanted suspects, detained undocumented immigrants and cracked down on liquor, gambling and drug-related offences during a coordinated operation aimed at improving safety and enforcing compliance.

A large-scale crime prevention operation conducted by the SAPS in the Tshwane metro resulted in the arrest of 330 suspects during an operation carried out in the Pretoria West and Pretoria Central policing precincts on June 6.

The operation, led by Tshwane District Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine, brought together various law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Home Affairs, TMPD, and local CPFs, in a coordinated effort to combat crime and enforce compliance with various laws.

According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, the operation began on Friday night with detective teams targeting wanted suspects linked to serious crimes such as murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and rape.

Of the total arrests made, 245 were executed by detectives who tracked down and apprehended wanted suspects across the district.

“The success of this operation highlights the commitment of SAPS and its partners to ensuring safer communities.

“Through coordinated efforts, we were able to apprehend wanted suspects, enforce compliance with legislation and maintain a visible policing presence in crime hotspots,” said Van Dyk.

As part of the operation, law enforcement officers conducted a strategic roadblock and stop-and-search activities.

A total of 576 people and 182 vehicles were searched during the high-visibility operation.

The Department of Home Affairs detained 60 undocumented immigrants who are currently undergoing verification processes before possible deportation.

Van Dyk said liquor compliance inspections were carried out at 12 licensed premises, and six were closed for failing to comply with the Liquor Act, while authorities confiscated 109 bottles and containers of liquor during the inspections.

In a separate incident, targeted patrols led to the arrest of one suspect for possession and dealing in drugs after officers discovered seven small bags containing various illegal substances in his possession.

Van Dyk said public order offences were also addressed during the operation, as seven people were fined for drinking alcohol in public, while three others were arrested and fined for illegal gambling activities.

Authorities also inspected 16 second-hand goods dealers across the operational area, and seven businesses were fined a combined R35 000 for non-compliance with the Second-Hand Goods Act.
