The Tshwane Metro is concerned over the attempted land invasion of Plot 61 in Ward 86, Mamelodi.

A person known to Rekord had been identified as the alleged instigator for mobilising community members to grab land.

The individual claimed to have ownership of both plots 60 and 61.

MMC for Human Settlements Alderman Aaron Maluleka said the metro wished to place on record that the properties in question are municipal land.

Maluleka said any individual claiming ownership of these properties must provide valid title deeds or other legally recognised proof of ownership to the metro.

He added that the metro respects the institution of traditional leadership.

Maluleka said the metro continues to work collaboratively with traditional leaders serving in Council to advance development and address the needs of communities within their respective areas of jurisdiction.

“No individual, including a traditional leader, has the authority to unlawfully allocate, sell or distribute municipal land,” said Maluleka.

He said the metro is concerned about allegations that the person involved is collecting money from community members in connection with the allocation or sale of residential stands.

Residents are urged to exercise caution and not to pay money to individuals who claim to have the authority to allocate or sell municipal land.

The allocation of municipal residential stands must be undertaken through lawful and approved processes.

He added that anyone found to be unlawfully selling or allocating municipal land may face criminal charges.

Structures erected unlawfully on municipal land will also be dealt with in accordance with applicable legislation and court processes.

The metro is working with the relevant law-enforcement authorities to monitor the situation and will take decisive action to protect municipal land and prevent unlawful occupation.

Maluleka urged residents to report suspected land invasions, illegal sales of stands and individuals soliciting money for the allocation of municipal land through the appropriate city and law-enforcement channels.

He concluded that the metro remains committed to protecting municipal land, upholding the law and ensuring that land is allocated through transparent, fair and lawful processes.
