Braai teams fire up fundraiser for Phyllis Robertson Home
Five teams went head-to-head in a themed braai competition to raise funds and awareness for people living with disabilities at Phyllis Robertson Home.
The smell of braai filled the air as five teams battled it out during the annual braai competition at Phyllis Robertson Home, bringing residents, families and friends together for a day of fundraising and community support.
The competing teams were Die Werkswinkel, Die Swerwers, Die Bokkies, Toekomsvonk Plaaskombuis and Sizzle Squad.
Phyllis Robertson Home manager Jady Hewitt said the annual event, which started about three years ago, aims to raise funds for residents while creating greater awareness about people living with disabilities.
“We predominantly invite the parents and the families of the residents, and then they normally bring some friends along so that the circle expands,” Hewitt said.
Each team was required to have a theme, prepare a menu and serve its food at a specific time during the competition.
Alongside the braai competition, stalls were set up where residents sold items they had made themselves.
Hewitt said the event was important because the home is privately funded and does not receive government subsidies.
“It’s basically to raise awareness of people with disabilities and also to raise funds because we are not subsidised in any way,” she said.
The home accommodates people with a wide range of disabilities, including people who require significant assistance as well as residents with greater independence.
Hewitt said residents include road accident and stroke survivors, suicide survivors and people living with degenerative diseases.
The event also provided an opportunity for new visitors to learn more about the home and its residents.
“It’s especially nice when we have new people here, because they become ambassadors for Phyllis Robertson Home and for the people with disabilities,” she said.
