Sports highlights, 10 to 12 April

With the winter just around the corner, luckily your weekend sport highlights are red hot and action-packed.

Winter is creeping closer but fortunately there is hot sports action to counter the cooler weather this weekend.

Rugby

Schools rugby: The last day of the North vs South tournament at Menlo Park takes place on Saturday. The action starts at 08:15 with a game between Hoërskool Middelburg and Grey College’s second team. Then three local schools, Waterkloof (09:45), Garsfontein (11:15) and Menlo Park (12:45) will engage in three consecutive games against CHS Australia, Paarl Gimnasium and Outeniqua respectively.

SupeRugby: After losing against the Lions, the Bulls will look to bounce back when they tackle the Reds at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 19:10. The Bulls are on the top of the South African log and third on the combined conference log.

In other SupeRugby games, the Lions takes on the Sharks at Emirates Airline Park (Ellispark) at 17:00 on Saturday.

Earlier Saturday morning the Stormers takes on the Waratahs in Sydney (11:40 SA time) and the Cheetahs plays against Western Force in Perth (13:45 SA time).

Cricket

For cricket lovers, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has just returned to our screens and many of our favourite players we saw at the 2015 ICC World Cup play in this tournament.

On Thursday (16:30 SA time) we will see Faf du Plessis and Kyle Abbot’s team, the Chennai Super Kings, in action against the Delhi Daredevils, with the most South Africans in their squad (Albie Morkel, JP Duminy, Quinton de Kock and Imran Tahir), while they are coached by Gary Kirsten.

David Miller’s Kings XI Punjab will face the Rajasthan Royals, with Rusty Theron and Chris Morris in their ranks at the MCA International stadium in Pune on Friday at 16:30.

On Saturday the Sunrisers Hyderabad (with Dale Steyn) will be in action at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai against the Chennai Super Kings. This game starts at 12:30.

Also on Saturday the Kolkata Knight Riders, with Morné Morkel and Johan Botha in their squad, will look to get one over the Royal Challengers Bangalore with AB de Villiers and Rilee Rossouw at Eden Gardens in Kolkata at 16:30.

Sunday will produce two mouth-watering games. Firstly the Delhi Daredevils play against the Rajasthan Royals at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi at 12:30. Then at 16:30 the Mumbai Indians, with Marchant de Lange the only South African in their ranks, plays against the Kings XI Punjab.

Soccer

Nedbank Cup: SuperSport United takes on first division side Golden Arrows on Saturday night in the quarter final of the Nedbank Cup. Gordon Igesund’s charges are three wins away from winning their second major trophy this season after winning the Telkom Knock-out Cup in December.

On the other hand, Mamelodi Sundowns will battle Mpumalanga Black Aces twice in the space of four days when they take on Amazayoni at the Mbombela stadium on Sunday. Their last match was a 1-1 draw on Wednesday.

Golf

The US Masters Golf Tournament is the year’s first ‘Major’ tournament and is played annually at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. This year’s tournament kicked off on Thursday 9 April and runs until Sunday 12 April.

Charl Schwartzel, Trevor Immelman, Ernie Els, Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace are the South Africans who will be in action in this year’s US Masters tournament.
