Sport Highlights, 14 to 16 August

Apart from the Blue Bulls' first Currie Cup match at Loftus Versfeld on Friday, there is also international cricket on the menu for local sports fans feeling like attending a sports event this weekend.

The end of winter is fast approaching and it looks like the worst of the cold weather is over. That also means the time has come to look forward to sports like local cricket.

Rugby

The schools rugby season is heading to a close, but there are still a few good games to look forward to. On Saturday, Oos-Moot will play at home against Helpmekaar (big schools) and next week Tuesday its time for the macro schools semi-final between Garsfontein and Monument at Garsfontein.

The Blue Bulls kicked off their Currie Cup campaign with a bang when they overran the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein last week. On Friday night, they will play their first home game at 19:10 on Loftus Versfeld against Griquas.

Cricket

New Zealand is visiting South Africa on a short cricket tour and their first T20 game will be played on Friday 14 August in Durban. On Sunday 16 August, the second T20 game will take place on SuperSport Park in Centurion. The game starts at 14:00.

On Wednesday the two teams return to SuperSport Park for the first One-Day International between them. That game will start at 12:30.

Golf

The American PGA championships, one of the Major Tournaments in golf, started on 13 August. This year it will be played on the Whistling Straits course in Wisconsin. Eight South Africans will tee off on day one in the tournament. Except for top players like Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen and Ernie Els, Pretoria’s own George Coetzee will be one of the hopeful players on day one.

Athletics

The Phobians running club of Pretoria presents the Ocean Basket Marcel vt Slot Memorial race on Saturday morning. The race will start and end at Pretoria Boys High School. The event includes a 15km road race and a 5km fun run. The 15km race starts at 07:00 and the 5km fun run starts at 07:15.
