Sports highlights, 11 to 13 September
Spring has finally arrived in Pretoria and sports fans can look forward to a variety of action this weekend.
All eyes of sport lovers will be on Flushing Meadows in New York this weekend, where the champions in the last Grand Slam tournament of the year will be crowned.
Tennis
After a long drought since the retirement of top tennis players like Wayne Ferreira and Amanda Coetzer, South Africa finally has a player again who probably will soon count among the top 10 in the world.
South Africans’ hearts swelled with pride when the Johannesburger Kevin Anderson earlier this week went through to the quarter-finals of the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Though he lost his next match against Stan Wawrinka of Switserland, Anderson has certainly managed to draw South Africa’s attention to the US Open.
Rugby
With the World Cup kicking off only on 18 September, the Currie Cup series will still enjoy all the attention of South African rugby supporters this weekend.
The long-awaited battle between the only two unbeaten teams in the competition, the Lions and the Blue Bulls, will bring Pretoria to a standstill on Saturday night.
This important “Jukskei river derby” kicks off at 19:00 on Saturday evening at Loftus Versfeld.
Athletics
The Value Logistics Addicted to Life Half Marathon & 10 km is once again presented at the campus of the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria West. Runners will be able to choose between a 21.1km half-marathon and a 10km road race. They will also present a 5km fun run for the less fit runners. All races starts at 06:00. Soccer
It’s time again for Premiership soccer action this weekend. All the local Pretoria teams will be in action.
The first game with a local flavour is also the first game of the weekend. Mamelodi Sundowns take on Golden Arrows at the Chatsworth stadium in Durban. The game starts at 15:00 on Saturday.
Later on Saturday night (18:00) SuperSport United plays against Kaizer Chiefs in the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane.
On Sunday afternoon at 15:00, the two student’s teams AmaTuks and Wits will both be involved in their fourth games of the season when they take each other on at the Tuks stadium in Pretoria.
