Sport Highlights 19 – 21 August
The culmination of the Olympics, international rugby and cricket are all on the sports menu for South Africans this weekend.
It is almost unbelievable that two weeks could pass so quickly, but this weekend the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will come to an end.
Olympic Games
After two weeks of the very best action any sports fan can ask for, the Olympic Games will come to an end on Sunday. Meanwhile more history will be made on the courts and fields of this Games in Brazil. South Africans will hope for a few more medals before the final curtain comes down.
Rugby
The international rugby season continues this weekend when the Springboks play in their first game of The Rugby Championship against Argentina in Nelspruit. After the humiliation of last year’s hiding on home soil against the South Americans, the Springboks would like to start the tournament with a convincing victory. The game starts at 17:00 on Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile the Currie Cup competition continues and this weekend the Blue Bulls will face the struggling EP Kings. The game will be played on Friday night at Loftus Versfeld and starts at 19:10.
Cricket
The cricket season is imminent and similar to last year, the Black Caps of New Zealand will visit South Africa very early in the season. In fact, the official season has not started yet, but the first of two tests between the Proteas and the Black Caps will already start this Friday. The game is played in Durban starting at 10:00 daily.
Soccer
The soccer season is also back with us and two of South Africa’s biggest tournaments will both start in the next week.
The first round of games in the Premier soccer league starts early next week. While Mamelodi Sundowns is still busy with their responsibilities in the Confederation of African Football (Caf) Champions League, SuperSport United will be the only local team in action next week. They will play against Platinum Stars next Wednesday at the Royal Bafokeng stadium in Rustenburg.
The MTN8 tournament starts next weekend.
Athletics
The annual Marcel van’t Slot Ocean Basket Memorial Race is presented by Phobians Athletics Club on 20 August and the event offers athletes the option of a 15km road race, a 15km walk or a 5km fun run. All races start and finish at Pretoria Boys High School. The route is exciting and challenging. The scenic and historic section through Boys High is a treat for those who enjoy something new.
The 15km race starts at 07:00; the 15km walk at 06:50; and the 5km fun run at 07:10. Enquiries: Dimitri Kavallineas on 082 773 3603.
