Violence breaks during Varsity Cup final in Pretoria

Four people were seriously injured during a soccer game between TUT and Tuks

Four people were reportedly admitted to hospital with injuries after fans invaded the pitch during a match between TUT and the University of Pretoria on Thursday in the Varsity Cup final.

Tuks won the final 2-0, at the TUT stadium.

The violence broke out after Tuks scored their second goal in the 85th minute.

Angry fans invaded the stadium which saw players, coaching staff and referees dash for the cover of the change-rooms.

Several people were injured before police could intervene and control the unruly crowd.

TUT vice-chancellor and principal Professor Lourens van Staden condemned the violence.

“Fans invaded the pitch with approximately six minutes remaining and the game was subsequently stopped. There should always be a healthy competition at sports games, but this regress into violent behaviour and damage to property is unacceptable,” he said.

“The university is investigating the matter.”

Police spokesperson Captain Thomas Mufamadi said he was aware of the incident but could not provide further details.
