Soccer coaching programme launched in Pretoria

A new premier skills coaching programme kicked off in Hatfield last month where 60 mentors were trained.
This global coach and referee development programme run by the UK premier league, local soccer league, Safa and the British Council, took place from 12 to 18 November with intensive training for 60 grassroots football coaches and 24 referees.
Mamelodi-based coach Julius Mandlazi was one of the local premier skills coaches who assisted the UK-based coaches in the programme.
He told Rekord on Wednesday that the seven-day programme was about uplifting young and upcoming coaches.
“The premier skills provides high-level training for coaches and also gives them the education material they need in order to advance their skills, including how to operate and what methods to use during training. The most important aspect is for coaches to understand the sport so they can provide proper training.”
He said the coaches would use the acquired skills to develop and co-ordinate projects in their own schools and communities.

Premier skills uses football to develop a brighter future for young people around the world, drawing upon the global appeal of the premier league and its expertise in delivering community programmes in the UK, alongside the British Council’s global network and track-record of delivery.
Through premier skills, young people, often including the most vulnerable in society, are given opportunities to become better integrated into their local communities, to develop their skills for employability and to raise their self-esteem.
The course was hosted at the high-performance centre at the University of Pretoria. The programme was supported by Alex Curran and Steven Bell, community coaches from Middlesbrough FC and Newcastle United FC respectively.
