Mamelodi Sundowns have opened a five-point lead in the log following their 1-0 win over Maritzburg United on Wednesday.
A lone goal from Percy Tau gave the Brazilians all the three points at Loftus Versveld.
The win took the Pretoria side to 25 points, five ahead of the nearest rivals Orlando Pirates. Downs however still have two games in hand and could open an 11-point lead if they win all their games in hand.
Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane praised Maritzburg who made Downs sweat for their win.
“We were sweating, (but) we survived. We needed experience. We had to put defenders to rob the result. They have the speed, the young (Siphesihle) Ndlovu, number 8, is unbelievable. He always punched holes in our defence but we had the experience so we survived,” he told SuperSport TV.
“I’m so happy with Percy with the goal he scored. We have been telling him to go into his left. He was always coming to the left and passing but [this time] he hit it, it’s unbelievable,” Mosimane said.

Tau has been sensational for Downs this season. He has often come through for Downs in crucial times which has made Mosimane happy.
Sundowns next face Bloemfontein Celtic on Saturday as they look to close the year on a high.
In another game played on Wednesday night at Goblepark, Free State, SuperSport United suffered their second loss of the season, going down 1-0 to Free State Stars.
Although Matsatsantsa still have five games in hand, they look unlikely to challenge for the league honours.
They lie 11th on the log with only 15 points from nine games.
Their last two games saw them draw with Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City.
Against Stars, Eric Tinkler’s side lacked composure despite having a one-man advantage.
On Sunday, United travel to Polokwane to face the highflying Baroka FC.
