Caroline Wostmann honored by her club on eve of Comrades
Caroline Wostmann one of the favourites to win this year's women race in the Comrades Marathon was honoured by her club last week
The Nedbank Running Club of Pretoria last week closed off their preparations for this year’s Comrades Marathon with their annual Comrades function.
They started the evening with their weekly time trial before the formalities began.
This was followed by a Comrades related talk by legendary ‘King of the Comrades’, Bruce Fordyce. As usual, Fordyce didn’t disappoint. He’s a great entertainer and always provides very valuable advice for Comrades runners.
Several prizes were also handed out shortly after Fordyce‘s speech. One of the country’s emerging superstars in road races, Caroline Wostmann, walked away with two of these prices.
The club recently implemented a “member of the month” award whereby they honour members who are actively involved with the club. Be it for helping out at the race tent or with monthly club braais, being active at the club with time trials and social events or assisting as a mentor to new runners.
The management of the club decided that it was important to give a little back to these valued members in the form of this award. The winners get a small medal, Futurelife products and a voucher at a well-known sport shop.
The member of the month for May was Caroline Wostmann, who makes a great effort to attend time trials and social events and also for her achievement of wining the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon during April.
The club also decided to honour Wostmann with a special award. Ursula King, chairman of the club explained that price as follows: “Whilst we know that she got various endorsements and prize money for winning the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon, we also know that unlike most elite athletes Caroline has a full time job. In addition she somehow manage to juggle raising two kids, running a household with the support of her husband Haiko and a rigorous training schedule. But most importantly, she makes the time to attend our club nights and social events with her family. This, along with her athletic achievement, we value and respect so much which is why we decided to give her a special ‘thank you’-gift”.
